I am lost in a sea of green. A private with no privacy.  No one here knows me, save the gun in my hand. Soldiers upon soldiers line the banks beside me, shells of their former lives. Day and night we live, breathe and deal in death. Death is our life. We are killing machines down to our last breaths. Some relish it; they feel an overwhelming sense of power as they stroke the barrel cocked in their hands. Maybe they think there is some semblance of heroism in cutting down numerous Germans, many of them little more than boys. Sometimes this is not a war. It is a mere slaughtering of the innocents. Bullet holes appear in the dirt next to me.
